Your relationship with yourself
Without me I can’t be in relationship with anything. At the start and end of all things, the human being is always closest to himself. Although me is not necessarily the beginning and source of everything, we always see the world through our own window. We don’t see the world as it truly is, but rather as we want it to be. By knowing ourselves we also know our surroundings. In psychology, me means everything a person sees as a part of ”me”. Me is a human being’s personal perception of himself. With the help of me we analyze our observations so that they become meaningful and reasonable.
The essence of ”me” was contemplated already by the ancient Egyptians, and they agreed that inside of the human brain lives a tiny person, a homunculus. It monitors thoughts, choices and all activities and takes care of them. It was commonly believed that it is possible for the human being to observe the actions of that homunculus and consider what is to be maintained and what is to be removed.
Who am I actually? - a familiar question. The answer to that question resolves the choices of your life and consequently the quality of your life. Although you by chance wouldn’t be interested in your quality of life, the majority of your species certainly is. Because we are not lonely islands in Universe, our choices have a crucial significance for other people as well. That is why the question of your state of ”me” is essential and pivotal. The more precise we are in asking the question, the better is the quality of the answer. Therefore we should closely contemplate, who we really are and what impact the identity we express has on both our life and the life of those around us. Self-awareness is the key word here.
Thoughts come and go, and so do feelings. Also our profession, business role and living conditions can highly vary during our lives. None of these things can therefore equal our real ”me”. Changing your clothes, driving a new car or moving into a better apartment doesn’t change the essence of you. Or does it? Do we equal our external circumstances? Hopefully not. It is advisable that the essence of you is something deeper and longer lasting, independent of external factors.
A story tells us of a lion, who came to a flock of sheep and to his astonishment saw another lion there. It had for some reason grown up among the sheep since it was a cub. The lion imitated the lambs – his external surroundings – with his gestures and appearance. When the ”real” lion appeared among the sheep, they all started to shake in fear.
The lion said to the lamb-lion: ”Why are you here with the sheep?”
The lamb-lion answered: ”I am a sheep”.
”No you’re not”, the other lion said. ”Come with me to see who you really are.”
So both of them went to a lake, and for the first time the lamb-lion could see his image as a reflection on the surface of the lake. In that instant the lamb-lion’s identity changed – it had found it’s real identity.Have You?
